How the Uganda Salary Database Works

What this is

The Uganda Salary Database is an anonymous, crowdsourced collection of gross monthly salaries from formally employed Ugandans. It exists to reduce the information gap that normally favours employers: when you can see what a role typically pays, you can negotiate from knowledge rather than guesswork. It is free and public, built for workers and job seekers — not for employers.

What we collect

  • Your gross monthly salary (taken directly from the PAYE calculation you just ran)
  • Your profession, sector, career level, and location
  • Optionally, your employer / company

That's it. We do not collect your name, email, phone number, or any other personal detail on the salary submission. No account is created.

Why your salary entry is accurate

The salary field is pre-filled from the figure you entered into the PAYE calculator and cannot be edited on the submission form. This anchors submissions to a real, just-calculated number rather than a vague self-report — which makes the whole dataset more reliable.

How we keep you anonymous

To prevent duplicate submissions and abuse, we compute two one-way fingerprints when you submit:

  • a submission hash (a salted SHA-256 of your IP address and browser details) used only to stop the same browser submitting repeatedly; and
  • an IP hash (a salted SHA-256 of your IP) used only to rate-limit submissions and detect gaming.

Both are irreversible and salted with a secret that never leaves our server. We never store your raw IP address, browser fingerprint, or any identifying signal. A breach of our database would expose salary + profession + sector + level + location + (sometimes) employer — none of it tied to an identifiable person.

The minimum-group rule (why some figures are hidden)

We only ever display a figure for a group large enough that no single person can be picked out of it. We collect detailed data from day one, but we only show it once a group crosses a threshold. Below that, results roll up to a broader group and we tell you so plainly.

  • Company × profession figures need at least 5 submissions
  • Profession and sector figures need at least 4 (4 for a sector)
  • An overall personal rank needs at least 5 total submissions

This is why, early on, a search for "accountant at MTN Uganda" may instead show "all accountants" — the specific cell isn't large enough yet to display safely. As more people contribute, finer views unlock automatically.

A note on who contributes (selection bias)

Because submissions are voluntary, the data can lean toward whoever is most motivated to contribute. You don't need to be unhappy with your pay to take part — in fact, accurate data from people who are paid fairly is exactly what keeps the medians honest and useful for everyone. We show sample sizes alongside figures so you can judge how settled a number is.

What we never do

  • Sell or expose individual salary records
  • Link your salary to your identity, email, or phone number
  • Build employer dashboards or "claim your company" tools
  • Share data with anyone in a form that could identify an individual

Any salary-alert emails you opt into are stored entirely separately from the salary database and are never linked to your submission.
